Poplars (Populus spp.) are important tree species in poplar plantations and agroforestry programs due to their fast growth, high biomass production, and ecological adaptation. On the other hand, mycorrhizal fungi directly and indirectly improve plant growth by resisting abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity, heavy metal pollution, and biotic stresses such as pests and diseases. Therefore, considering climate change and salinization of water and land, the need to produce stress-resistant seedlings using ectomycorrhizal fungi seems essential. In this study, the possibility of establishing symbiosis between the ectomycorrhizal fungus Laccaria bicolor and poplar seedlings under greenhouse conditions was investigated by inoculating fungal substrate into poplar pots. After a period of growth, the morphophysiological (growth parameters and biomass production) and biochemical (main nutrient elements) characteristics of mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal one-year-old poplar seedlings under salt stress conditions were evaluated. Overall, the results of these experiments showed that L. bicolor is a suitable option for forming ectomycorrhizal symbiosis compatible with the ecological characteristics of poplar trees and making nutrients available for the growth of these plants. The results of statistical data analysis showed that ectomycorrhizal treatment had a significant effect on growth variables (stem length), biomass production (dry biomass of roots and shoots), and nutrient concentrations (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) in poplar seedlings. Also, in mycorrhizal seedlings under salt stress conditions, a significant increase in the levels of antioxidant enzymes, photosynthesis, and transpiration was observed compared to non-mycorrhizal seedlings.
