Abstract

Due to their high adaptability to Tehran’s climatic conditions and their important role in air purification and microclimate regulation, plane (Platanus orientalis L.) trees are among the most characteristic species in the city’s urban green spaces, particularly along Vali-Asr Street. This study aimed to investigate the environmental and managerial factors influencing the structure and stability of plane trees in the section between Parkway and Tajrish squares, using an ecological–managerial approach. All plane trees with a diameter greater than 20 cm were completely inventoried, and their vegetative and environmental characteristics were recorded. The results indicated that there were 1166 trees on the eastern side and 1269 on the western side, including 97 and 127 dead trees, respectively. The mean tree height ranged from 20 to 21 meters, while the mean trunk diameter varied between 46 and 48 cm. Tree density was higher on the western side, and the tallest trees reached 28 meters. Statistical analyses revealed a significant relationship between building height and reduced distance between trees and buildings with decreased vitality and increased mortality. New and tall buildings had the most negative effects on the health of plane trees. It is recommended that dead and weakened trees receive special care, proper spacing between trees and buildings be maintained, and strict control over building height and urban development be implemented. Selecting appropriate tree species and forms based on local environmental conditions and using analytical data for management planning are also essential for promoting the sustainable health and management of urban plane trees.
